To reach this spectacular bay involves an inspiring sail across Gemiler bay and past the island after which it is named, before entering this hidden cove. The bay is aptly named; its icy freshwater springs that bubble up under the sea make it a particularly invigorating place to swim in the heat of the summer. Overlooking the beach is a popular restaurant from where a bracing walk will take you to the abandoned Orthodox Christian town of Livissi in Kayaköy, recreated as Eskibahçe in Louis de Bernières’ masterpiece ‘Birds Without Wings.’

A yacht lovers’ paradise, located in the heart of the Gulf of Fethiye, the small, compact town of Göcek is framed by mountains and, looking out onto the stunning Twelve Island area, is renowned as an excellent sailing area.

Close to some of the most perfect hidden coves and bays, and incredible blue, green and turquoise waters, Göcek is popular but at the same time there is always a secluded hidden bay to unwind after a great day’s sailing or cruising.

Göcek town has a range of shops for provisioning, chandlers and boat yards. There is a wide selection of shops for a spot of retail therapy too as well as a bustling weekly market.

The restaurants in Göcek are some of the best around, with prices to suit all budgets and cuisines to suit all tastes. The area is, of course, particularly well known for its large variety of fresh seafood, fish, fresh vegetables and salads.

The Surrounding Sailing Area

Southwest Turkey’s sunny skies, warm turquoise waters, cooling breezes, deserted anchorages and tranquil bays are just some of the aspects that make PORTWAY’s sailing area so special.

The Mediterranean climate of southwest Turkey has sunshine and clear, blue skies almost every day from April to November. The coastline is a mixture of wide gulfs, peaceful coves, shady beaches, uninhabited islands, small villages and bustling towns. Many of these locations are still only accessible by boat - truly a yachtie's paradise with constant and predictable winds offering ideal sailing conditions for both the novice and the experienced sailors.

You will be welcomed wherever you go and shown genuine, traditional hospitality. Turkish people adore young children and go out of their way to give them special attention. Communication is not a problem as most people speak adequate English.

Turkish food is one of the great cuisines of the world and the coastal restaurants invariably offer an amazing selection of delicious starters, known as meze. Main dishes include freshly caught fish, kebabs, köfte (spicy meatballs) as well as vegetarian dishes.

Shopping is a culturally interesting and enjoyable experience, especially in the bazaars and markets. The variety of crafts, ranging from carpets, jewellery, leather goods and ceramics is vast and prices are reasonable. Haggling is par for the course and you may be invited to drink tea as you negotiate.

Although in recent years Turkey has become a very popular tourist destination, development has been confined to larger, purpose built resorts. The majority of the country remains unspoiled.
